Farmworker Awareness Week

This year, during the week of March 24-31, many Bon Appétit cafés will celebrate National Farmworker Awareness Week.

Although many people think of farmworker rights as an immigration issue, we at Bon Appétit view it as simply a human rights one. Did you know that the American citizens we depend on to harvest our food are exempt from many of the workplace protections like minimum wage and overtime laws that you and I enjoy? Did you know that harvesting fruits and vegetables quickly and safely takes quite a lot of skill, yet farmworkers receive just pennies per pound of the end retail price consumers pay?
